How to use this calculator
The time calculator adds and subtracts durations without confusing base-60 time with decimal arithmetic. Use Duration list to total several sessions or deduct time already used. Enter explicit units such as 2h 15m, or use colon notation with the matching interpretation. Blank lines can separate entries, and a minus sign subtracts a duration from the running total.
Use the clock mode when you know a start time and want the clock reading after a duration has passed. A clock result also needs its day offset: adding two hours to 23:30 reaches the following day. For dated journeys or events across daylight saving changes, use a tool with calendar dates and a named time zone instead.
Formula and calculation method
Total seconds = Σ(signed hours × 3,600 + signed minutes × 60 + signed seconds). Clock result = start clock + total duration, with a day offset.
Normalize before adding
Each complete duration is converted into seconds. The calculator sums those values, then divides them back into whole hours, minutes, and remaining seconds. This carries 60 minutes into an hour automatically. Explicit units are particularly helpful when a list mixes short tasks and long sessions, because every entry documents its own meaning.
Keep precision until the end
The total uses whole-second resolution. Changing displayed decimal precision does not repeatedly round the durations used in the sum. When moving a result into another tool, use the provided transfer link or the hours-and-minutes result. Copying a shortened decimal number into another calculation can discard a small part of the original duration.
Worked examples
Add two sessions
Enter 1h 50m + 2h 25m. The minutes add to 75, which becomes one extra hour and 15 minutes. Adding that extra hour to the three original hours gives 4h 15m. The same result is 255 minutes, 15,300 seconds, or 4.25 decimal hours.
Subtract a break
Enter 8h 30m - 45m. The gross duration is 510 minutes, and the deduction leaves 465 minutes. The result is 7h 45m. This is useful when you already know a shift’s duration; if you only have arrival and departure times, start with Hours Between Two Times Calculator.
Move a clock into tomorrow
Start with 23:30 and add 2h. Thirty minutes reaches midnight and another 90 minutes reaches 01:30. The result belongs to the next day. A clock reading alone would lose that fact, which is why you should keep the displayed day offset alongside the time when writing a schedule.
Edge cases and practical checks
Ambiguous colon values
A two-field value such as 01:30 can mean one hour and 30 minutes or one minute and 30 seconds. Choose the matching colon mode before calculating. Three fields mean hours, minutes, and seconds. Values after a colon must stay between 00 and 59; enter 90m when you mean 90 minutes.
Durations are different from calendar dates
A duration day here is exactly 24 hours. A calendar day in a location can contain a different number of elapsed hours during a time-zone transition. Similarly, a month does not have a fixed number of duration hours. Use Add or Subtract Dates for calendar offsets such as one month after January 31.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter several lines of time?
Yes. Separate duration entries with new lines, or use plus and minus operators between complete values. A later line without a sign adds to the total. For large files, validation by row, and downloadable output, use the Batch Time Calculator linked from this page.
How do I subtract more time than I have?
A duration total may be negative. For example, 1h - 90m is minus 30 minutes. That can describe a balance or shortfall. It does not mean a negative length of an actual appointment; interpret the sign according to the quantity you are comparing.
Can I use decimal hours?
Use an explicit suffix such as 1.5h. That represents one and a half hours. Do not assume an unlabelled decimal is a time of day. The Decimal Hours Converter is a convenient choice when converting one payroll-style decimal rather than summing a list.
Does changing rounding alter the total?
Display precision changes the decimal presentation, while the underlying sum remains at whole-second resolution. When you need to reconcile totals, compare seconds or full hours and minutes first. Different rounding policies in a spreadsheet may otherwise make identical source durations appear slightly different.
Does the calculator handle daylight saving?
Duration addition does not need a time zone, and clock mode uses a 24-hour cycle. Neither infers a dated clock change. To measure real elapsed time between local timestamps, use dated hours and supply the date, location, and repeated-time choices where needed.
What should I use for a week of shifts?
Use Time Card Calculator with Breaks when you have dated start and finish times. It tracks each shift separately, deducts breaks, and shows daily and weekly totals. This time calculator is best when your inputs are durations that have already been measured.
